Seasonal Intensives

Every season of the year at MeANS students take a break from their daily classes to dive into a two-week, grade level, interdisciplinary exploration of the natural sciences. Venturing out on field trips, conducting independent research, and partnering with local experts, students are tasked with creating place-based projects that apply the academic content and skills to meet the needs of their school, their community, and their local environment.

Weaving through the school year and 9-12 grade levels are sixteen Intensives, which provide students with opportunities to explore areas of natural science such as agriculture, forestry, aquaculture, alternative energy, and the environment. Students are expected to demonstrate 4 to 5 specific, interdisciplinary content standards during each Intensive,  as well as apply skills for problem solving and critical thinking. Two of MeANS most popular Intensives are the grade 9 Fall Maple Sugaring and grade 10 Summer Beekeeping Intensives!

One of the highlights of the Intensives program  is during senior year when students’ Fall Intensive explores the area of Oceanography via the Essential Question,  How has the ocean shaped the history and culture of Maine and of our community?  During this Intensive, students participate in numerous experiences and field trips that include sailing off the coast of Maine  and tours to the Maine Maritime Museum, Bath Iron Works, Portland Fish Market and Southern Maine Community College’s Ocean Studies program. Projects and products created as a result of this Intensive include seaweed compost, seaweed Cyanotypes, and “Tales of Interest.”

Intensives are taught in a collaborative, co-teaching fashion by faculty members with an end goal of achieving MeANS Mission for “inspiring and engaging students through project-based, student-centered instruction immersed in the natural sciences of Maine, while connecting students to their education in order to grow as individuals, interact with their communities, and lead fulfilling lives.”
