Innovating Education in Maine
CRCS provides a comprehensive and forward-thinking curriculum that prepares students for success in a rapidly evolving world.

An Overview of Progressive Academic Programming
The Community Regional Charter School (CRCS) in Maine is a beacon of innovative education, offering a diverse range of programs designed to meet the needs of 21st-century learners. As Maine’s only PK-12 Charter School, CRCS has carved a niche for itself by adopting interdisciplinary courses, proficiency-based learning, and a unique scheduling system that fosters academic excellence and personal growth. Nestled in the heart of the community, CRCS provides three locations for student learning: Overman Academy (grades 7-12), Dimensions Academy (grades K-6), and Creative Children’s Academy (PK). CRCS also partners with Kennebec Valley Community College to offer students the opportunity to earn college credits via a dual enrollment program.
Interdisciplinary Learning
At CRCS learning transcends traditional subject boundaries. Interdisciplinary courses of learning are the hallmark of the school's curriculum, emphasizing the integration of multiple disciplines to provide a holistic understanding of complex topics. These courses encourage students to draw connections between different areas of knowledge, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills. By exploring subjects through various lenses, students gain a deeper appreciation and comprehension of the material, preparing them for the multifaceted challenges of the modern world.
Proficiency-Based Learning
CRCS champions proficiency-based learning, a student-centered and ungraded approach that focuses on meeting students’ needs at their level, while mastering skills and competencies rather than merely completing coursework. This method allows students to progress at their own pace, ensuring that they fully understand each concept before moving forward. In order to achieve proficiency, students must provide evidence of meeting learning targets via assessments, presentations, projects, or demonstrations. Teachers provide personalized support and guidance, helping students set and achieve meaningful academic goals. By emphasizing mastery, proficiency-based learning cultivates resilience, independence, and a lifelong love of learning.
Seven-Week Units
Overman Academy operates on a distinctive schedule, dividing the academic year into seven-week units. This structure enables students to immerse themselves deeply in their subjects, allowing for intensive study and exploration. The shorter terms create a dynamic learning environment, reducing burnout and maintaining student engagement. Each seven-week unit culminates in assessments that measure students' proficiency and understanding, ensuring that learning objectives are met consistently throughout the year.
Five Seminars a Day
Overman Academy’s daily schedule is designed to maximize learning opportunities and accommodate diverse interests. Students are allowed choice in selecting four daily seminars which cover core subjects, elective courses, and specialized topics. These seminars are interactive and discussion-based, encouraging active participation and collaboration. Students’ fifth seminar is grouped by ability and designed using Pathways to Careers, which introduces math concepts to students and how these concepts are applied in various careers. The varied daily schedule keeps students motivated and engaged, providing ample opportunity to delve into their passions and explore new areas of interest.
Electives
Elective courses of learning are offered at each of CRCS’s school locations. These Electives offer students the freedom to tailor their education to their personal interests and career aspirations. The school provides a wide array of elective options, ranging from the arts and humanities to science and technology. These courses allow students to pursue their passions, develop new skills, and discover potential career paths. Electives enrich their academic experience, fostering creativity and innovation while enabling students to make informed choices about their future.
